BY eric jAY Toll etoll@bizjournals.com 602-308-6516, @PhxBizeric As Arizona summer temperatures soar, new National Bank of Arizona president Mark Young looks forward each week to his Friday commute — not to his Phoenix home, but to his family cabin in Sand- point, Idaho. “I commute to the cabin in the sum- mer,” he said in his corner Biltmore office. “It’s a place where I love to relax, get away from the heat and really refresh myself.” His time in the Valley is focused large- ly on his new job as head of the Arizona banking arm of Zions Bancorp. He also serves on the governance committee of the Child Crisis Nursery. “I believe it’s important to change the cycle of violence for children,” he said. “(The nursery) is there when a child needs protection from a family problem.” Young and his wife have three chil- dren, two of whom are out of the house with the third still at home, but working. Between banking responsibilities and his board work, he has managed a few major family vacations. “ACape Cod family tripwas one of my favorites,” he said. Another important family initiative has been to explore the world from a Christian perspective. To do that, Young has taken the family to Boston, london, France, rome, egypt and Israel. Young is a university of Southern Cal- ifornia graduate in finance. He lived in the Valley from 1964 to 1973. Bob Sabek, a bank manager at Valley National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.), lured him back to Arizona in 1982 to work in retail banking. His career experience includes a stint at grossmont Bank with robert Sarv- er, now Ceo of western Alliance Ban- corp. when grossmont was purchased by Sumitomo Bank, Young moved to Zions California Bank and Trust before coming to Arizona for National Bank of Arizona. Young and his management team strive to mentor young bankers in the organization. “Zions has a strong reputation for developing its management team from within the organization,” he said. He said he believes in changes in the banking industry. even though NBAZ has 65 branches, Young recognizes peo- ple are using branches less. “Bankers used to sit behind their desks all day, and people came to them,” he said. “Now, our bankers are enjoying the ability to get out of the office and be more personal withbanking customers.” The reduced branch usage allows his stafftoemphasizepersonalrelationships. “There’s a change in the entire culture of banking,” Young said.
